How to Get $#!^Done When You’re Sick and Tired

Now the holidays are over and I am seeing a common trend, my household included:
Everyone has come down with some sort of virus and is exhausted from all of the social obligations. Yes, even us extreme extroverts can get overstimulated around people. Haha!
I am an expert at being sick and tired.

I am also pretty darn good at getting a lot done while feeling worn out. Here are a few tips I would like to share to (hopefully) boost your productivity.

  1. Drink coffee. I know, I know… even my doctor has told me to limit the amount of caffeine per day, but here’s what I mean by this. Whether I drink regular or decaf, with soy or coconut milk, with sugar or stevia, there is something about the meditative process of brewing and sipping hot coffee throughout the day. It takes me away from the stress of uncompleted tasks, even if just for a few minutes, and allows my eyes to gaze away from a bright screen.
  2. Set realistic goals. I don’t know how many times I have had to remind myself of the fact that I am not Wonder Woman (my kid thinks she is). Here’s how I go about task management: set three small, manageable goals. Then, when I complete them, I set three more goals. This can be as simple as picking up stray laundry lying around the house or sending an email reply to a client. When you stay focused on a small number of tasks, you don’t get as overwhelmed.
  3. Say no. Saying no to extra projects, committees or event invitations is okay! I know you probably have a lot on your plate as it is, but you hate to disappoint anyone and you definitely hate missing out on the fun. But, for your well-being, you just have to check out sometimes.
  4. Enlist help. This is one of the hardest things for me to do… ever! I could be drowning in the middle of the lake and respond to rescuers with, “no, no, it’s okay. I got it!” Recently, I successfully asked for and accepted help with several things: childcare, accounting, and business coaching. Each time I enlist help, I feel a huge weight come off my shoulders.
  5. Find your groove. I have an ongoing playlist on Pandora that is based on the song “Happy” by Pharrell. For some reason, this particular series of songs makes me move my shoulders, sing out loud, and forget how tired I am! I very quickly find myself feeling more focused, excited, and energetic. If music is not your thing, maybe you can stimulate your senses a different way: think about redecorating your workspace with lively colors or diffusing invigorating essential oils.
